Dr. Christophe Declercq

Biography

Christophe Declercq is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University, specializing in translation technologies and cross-cultural communication. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. from Imperial College London, where he explored linguistic and socio-cultural identity in the context of temporary displacement. Over the years, Christophe has accumulated significant industry experience in the translation sector, having worked with various specialist companies, including Blondé and Yamagata Europe, as well as serving as a freelance translator focusing on sports, science, and socio-cultural history. In addition to his industrial expertise, he has a diverse teaching background that spans institutions such as Imperial College London, University College London, and the University of Antwerp. Christophe has also been actively involved as an expert evaluator for language technology funding applications within the European Commission for a decade and served as a board member of LIND during that same time. His research interests include intercultural communication in conflict scenarios, as evidenced by his co-editorship of works like 'Languages of World War' and 'Intercultural Crisis Communication', with a focus on how translation and interpreting play crucial roles in language automation and crisis situations. More recently, he has been involved in preparing a Routledge Handbook on Translation and Interpreting in Crises, alongside various outreach projects that valorize the narratives of Belgian refugees from World War I.
