Biography

Christophe Gagne is a Professor at the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. His research interests primarily focus on language use, contrastive pragmatics, translation, politeness theory, and discourse analysis. His Ph.D. thesis from Université Lumière Lyon II concentrated on contrastive analysis of French and British service encounters, with a particular emphasis on intercultural communication. He has delivered talks on the topic of alleged rudeness in French within various academic and public forums, including the Trinity French Society and the Cambridge Festival of Ideas. Currently, he is collaborating with a group of researchers at both the University of Helsinki and the University of Lyon on studying interruptions in parliamentary debates. Prior to his academic career at the University of Cambridge, Christophe worked as a translator for a private company, translating works including poetry and novels, notably John Fowles. He co-authored a textbook on translating English to French, published by Routledge in 2020. In addition to his research, Christophe has a background in producing language-learning resources and has been actively involved in educational outreach events, serving as a judge for competitions like the Mother Tongue Other Tongue Translation competition.
