Dr. Christopher Brewster

Biography

Christopher Brewster is a Professor in the Institute of Data Science at Maastricht University and a Senior Scientist in the Data Science group at TNO. His research interests lie in the application of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to societal issues, with a particular focus on agriculture, food, and environmental sustainability. Brewster is involved in major Horizon Europe projects including EU Farmbook, BioFIN, OpenAgri, and Ambrosia, where he takes on significant responsibilities such as principal investigator and project coordinator. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Sheffield, where he researched automated ontology learning from texts. Brewster's work addresses a range of topics, including semantic technologies, knowledge graphs, interoperability, and the ethics of artificial intelligence. He emphasizes the importance of the role of technology in society, considering both intended and unintended consequences. His current projects involve the application of digital technologies to improve agricultural practices and sustainability, managing biodiversity data, and enhancing food system logistics. Overall, Brewster integrates a broad systems theory perspective in his research that connects technology with societal applications and governance.
