Biography

Professor Christopher Briggs specializes in Medieval British Economic and Social History. His research addresses various questions related to society, economy, and law in England and Europe during the Middle Ages (1200-1500). His doctoral research focused on the rural economy of fourteenth-century England and resulted in a book published in the British Academy’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Monographs series. Professor Briggs is particularly interested in the interplay between law and institutions within medieval society, especially concerning the enforcement of agreements in commercial transactions. He is currently working on the participation of medieval English peasants in the wider legal system of their villages, with a particular focus on royal courts. From 2016 to 2020, he served as a co-investigator for an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust, exploring the living standards and material culture in English rural households from 1300 to 1600. Professor Briggs is also involved in supervising graduate students who work on aspects of economic and social history in England from around 1200 to 1500. His teaching includes lectures and supervisions for various subjects in Medieval History and Economic Social History, and he contributes to advisory roles for related academic publications and societies.
