Professor Burd received his PhD from Northwestern University, where he conducted research under Professor Gideon Dreyfuss, focusing on pre-mRNA processing. After earning his doctoral degree in 1994, he completed postdoctoral studies with Professor Scott Emr at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of California, San Diego. In 1998, he began his independent research program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he investigated inter-organelle trafficking.
