Biography

Christopher Bush (Ph.D. Comparative Literature, UCLA) is an Associate Professor in the Department of French and Italian at Northwestern University. He specializes in French and Comparative Literature and codirects the Global Avant-garde Modernist Studies graduate cluster. His research focuses on transnational interdisciplinary approaches to literary modernisms, particularly the connections between European and East Asian avant-gardes, as well as aesthetic theory and media. He is currently completing a book for Columbia University Press on modernist haiku in world literature, and has published articles in various journals including Esprit créateur and T. S. Eliot Studies Annual. His notable publications include Ideographic Modernism: China, Writing, Media (Oxford, 2010) and collaborative translations such as the critical edition of Victor Segalen’s Stèles (Wesleyan, 2007). He has served as coeditor for the journal Modernism/modernity from 2016 to 2021 and continues to be part of the editorial board. His academic honors encompass funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, a Fulbright research grant, and the Aldo Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Translation of Literary Work. He teaches a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate courses focused on modernist literatures of the early twentieth century, historical avant-gardes, and critical theory, including courses like 'The Avant-gardes World' and 'Proust and the Arts.'
