Biography

Chris Chiu is an Infectious Diseases physician and Immunologist. He underwent basic medical training at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford and completed his PhD at Oxford, supported by the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training fellowship. He advanced his research with the MRC Clinician Scientist fellowship, focusing on antibody and T cell responses to vaccines for influenza and varicella zoster virus. His research interests center on the pathogenesis and protective immunity of human respiratory viral infections, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, and SARS-CoV-2, which are significant causes of severe disease globally and necessitate improved vaccines and treatments. He has developed a unique set of experimental medicine techniques and is an expert in controlled human infection (CHI) studies, leading a group that utilizes infection and vaccination in volunteers. His patient-centered research aims to understand systemic mucosal immunity and its role in infections. Prof. Chiu leads the international CEPI-HERA MusICC betacoronavirus CHI consortium at Imperial and engages in various international research projects, promoting collaboration among researchers both in academia and industry to advance understanding of respiratory viral illnesses and vaccine development.
