Biography

Christopher De Sousa is a Professor at the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Toronto Metropolitan University. He has served as School Director from 2011 to 2018 and Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs from 2022 to 2024. Prior to joining TMU, he was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he contributed significantly to the Department of Geography and the Urban Studies Program. Dr. De Sousa holds a BA in Environment Resource Management, an MSc in Planning, and a PhD in Geography from the University of Toronto. He is a Registered Professional Planner, a member of the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, and the Canadian Institute of Planners. His research focuses on brownfield redevelopment, urban environmental management, park planning, and sustainability in Canada and the United States. He is currently leading a multi-year project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada that examines the funding and financing of brownfield redevelopment. Additionally, he has contributed to various prominent journals and authored a book titled 'Sustainable Brownfields Development: Building Sustainable Future Sites from Polluting Past' published by Routledge. His research is widely recognized and supported by several major organizations, and he has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field.
