Professor Christopher Dowson leads significant research on the emergence and evolution of antibiotic resistance in a variety of bacteria. His work primarily focuses on understanding the targets of penicillin in bacteria. After his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sussex, where he worked under Professor Spratt from 1986 to 1990, he held a prestigious Lister Institute Centenary Fellowship from 1991 to 1996. As a personal chair at the University of Warwick since 2000, he has contributed immensely to the field of Microbiology, with particular emphasis on multi-target approaches to antibiotic discovery. He has established the Sir Howard Dalton Centre for Translational Mechanistic Enzymology and currently serves as co-director of the Warwick Antimicrobial Interdisciplinary Centre. His research is multidisciplinary, involving collaborations with biologists, chemists, and engineers across several universities globally. Funding sources for his work include the BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC, and industry partners, which have allowed him to pursue innovative research aimed at combating AMR (antimicrobial resistance).
