Biography

Christopher Dye is a trained biologist and ecologist with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of York and a Doctorate from the University of Oxford. He has extensive experience in research on bloodsucking insect vectors of diseases such as leishmaniasis, malaria, and river blindness in Africa, Asia, and South America. From 1982 to 1996, he was based at Imperial College London and the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, focusing on the epidemiology of public health. In 1996, he joined the World Health Organization, where he developed methods for analyzing large quantities of health surveillance data. He served as WHO's Director of Strategy from 2014 to 2018, overseeing health information dissemination and coordination related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Now back at Oxford, his research interests include the economic, environmental, social, and behavioral determinants of health, particularly how people make choices for maintaining health and preventing disease.
