Biography

Christopher C. Fennell is a Professor of Anthropology and Law at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has conducted archaeological investigations at 19th century sites in Illinois, Virginia, and South Carolina, with grant support from the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Fennell has extensive legal experience as an associate attorney and clerked for Judge Jane R. Roth. His courses cover anthropology, social norms, racism, and archaeology, and he received several teaching awards for excellence. As a founding editor, he oversees the Journal of African Diaspora Archaeology and Heritage, among other editorial roles. His research contributed to the establishment of the New Philadelphia National Historic Site, the first national park honoring a town legally founded by African Americans. Fennell has published numerous works, including books on ethnicities and archaeology, and actively participates in various professional societies focusing on archaeology.
