Christopher Hammerly is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of British Columbia. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2020 and his B.A. and B.S. from the University of Minnesota in 2014. His work primarily focuses on understanding and documenting the ancestral language Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) and utilizes a variety of methods to explore cognitive representations and processes underpinning human knowledge, particularly in syntax and morphology. Hammerly is interested in the nature of basic units of morphosyntax and their participation in long-distance dependencies, movement, and agreement. Furthermore, he engages with the application of linguistic theory to create curricula aimed at language revitalization. Hammerly currently leads the Experimental Linguistics Fieldwork Lab (ELF-Lab) and actively recruits undergraduate students to participate in research that bridges laboratory methods with community engagement in language revitalization efforts. He is particularly keen on involving students with a background in computational methods.
