Dr. Christopher Helland

Biography

Christopher Helland is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology at Dalhousie University. His research focuses on the intersection of religion and contemporary culture from a sociological perspective. He examines how digital technology influences religious traditions and practices, including issues surrounding religious authority and power. His work includes exploring religious information-seeking behavior and ritual practices, as well as changing belief systems. Helland has conducted extensive research into video games and digital gaming, alongside contemporary apocalyptic movements and various UFO-based religious groups. Currently, he is investigating the developing role of artificial intelligence in contemporary religious activities and its effects on societal social systems.
