Biography

Christopher Janaway is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, where he specializes in the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and Friedrich Nietzsche. His main research interests focus on the relationships between Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, particularly concerning issues of morality, suffering, religion, and the affirmation of life versus pessimism. He is also researching aspects of classical Indian philosophy, examining the ethical and metaphysical concepts of self, including the Buddhist notion of ‘no-self.’ Janaway holds a BA and DPhil in Philosophy from the University of Oxford and has previously taught at Birkbeck, University of London, and held a visiting lectureship at the University of Sydney. He is a member of the Southampton Centre for Nineteenth-Century Research and is actively engaged in researching philosophical issues related to Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. His publications explore Schopenhauer's pessimism and his conceptions of Nietzsche's attitudes towards suffering, as well as the reception of these ideas in relation to Indian philosophy. Furthermore, he serves as the general editor for the Cambridge edition of Schopenhauer's Works and has participated in various academic conferences and seminars in his field.
