Biography

Christopher W. Kahler is a Professor in the Department of Behavioral Social Sciences at Brown University. He also serves as the Director of the Alcohol Addiction Studies and holds a position in Psychiatry and Human Behavior. Dr. Kahler received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University and has a strong research focus on smoking cessation treatments, particularly for individuals experiencing heavy drinking and alcohol misuse in the context of HIV care. His work includes being the Principal Investigator of several NCI and NIAAA-funded projects, exploring the intersection of behavioral science and public health outcomes for individuals living with HIV. Dr. Kahler has published extensively, with over 300 peer-reviewed publications, on topics including alcohol and tobacco addiction, personality and psychiatric conditions related to addiction, and strategies for reducing alcohol-related problems in vulnerable populations. He aims to develop innovative interventions that incorporate positive psychology into cessation programs and has explored the use of telehealth approaches in his research. He is also co-Director of the Substance Use Research Core at the Providence/Boston Center for AIDS Research.
