Professor Christopher Lucas leads a research group at the University of Edinburgh focusing on immunology and tissue regeneration, particularly in the context of injured lungs. He completed his Medical Degree and a BSc (Hons) in Physiology at the University of Edinburgh, followed by a Wellcome-trust funded PhD that investigated the mechanisms of cell death and its impact on tissue inflammation. His clinical training in Respiratory Medicine included a Wellcome Trust Fellowship in the laboratory of Kodi Ravichandran at the University of Virginia, where he studied the interplay between cell death and tissue repair in injured lungs. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, he initiated the ICECAP project to explore the immunopathology of tissues involved in fatal COVID-19 cases. In addition to his role at the University, he serves as an Honorary Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at NHS Lothian and holds an MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship to examine macrophage-epithelial interactions that facilitate epithelial regeneration. His contributions to the field have been recognized with several honors, including the Chair of Pulmonary Immunity and Regeneration and fellowships from prestigious medical associations.
