Dr. Christopher Mcall

Biography

Christopher McAll is a retired professor at the University of Montreal, where he has significantly contributed to the fields of sociology and history. He holds a multidisciplinary background in English literature, Celtic studies, and history from the University of Oxford and a postdoctoral degree in anthropology from McGill University. He co-founded the Montreal Research Centre on Social Inequalities, Discrimination, and Alternative Practices of Citizenship in 2004, leading the center until 2018. His research primarily focuses on the perception of social inequalities and citizenship equality in the history of social thought in the West since the Middle Ages, and on documenting and experimenting with strategies to counter social inequalities and discrimination in modern contexts. McAll is particularly interested in the evolution of social thought from the 17th to the 18th century and examines the interrelation and succession of various critical thought traditions since the 19th century. He develops engagements aimed at enhancing social equity and examines how alternative practices of citizenship can impact community well-being. His scholarly work emphasizes experiential knowledge, particularly among marginalized populations, seeking to amplify their voices and contributions to social discourse. McAll has supervised numerous graduate theses, and his current research includes exploring food security initiatives that promote sustainable and equitable community relations.
