Biography

Christopher McGowan is a Lecturer in the Department of English and Humanities at Yale University. His academic research focuses on modernism, world literature, and the history novel. McGowan is currently engaged in a book project titled 'Inherited Worlds: British Modernist Novel Sabotage Salvage Genre', which examines how anglophone writers of the early twentieth century repurposed and recombined nineteenth-century genres and Victorian family plots as a means to interrogate and salvage the ideological and aesthetic power of the British literary tradition in a new, post-imperial world. His academic writing has been published in notable journals such as 'Novel: Forum' and 'Qui Parle'. He teaches courses on modernist literature, postcolonial world-systems theory, and the politics of climate change, among other topics. McGowan also teaches seminars on Irish literature, focusing on the works of James Joyce and W.B. Yeats, and is involved in the Directed Studies program, which encompasses Literature, History, and Politics. Additionally, he is a founding member and co-organizer of the Left Literary Studies working group, which encourages collaborative research and writing in the field.
