Christopher Metcalf is a Tutorial Fellow in Classics at Queen's College, University of Oxford. He was born to Anglo-German parents and spent his early years across continental Europe and West Africa. In 2003, he moved to Britain to study Classical and Ancient Near Eastern languages at the University of Edinburgh, later completing his DPhil in Classics at the University of Oxford in 2013. Prior to his academic career, he gained work experience in journalism at the BBC’s French-language African radio station and the German broadsheet F.A.Z. However, his passion for teaching and research led him to an academic appointment at SOAS, University of London, where he taught as a substitute professor focusing on Babylonian studies. From 2013 to 2016, he served as a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford. His research includes the relationship between early Greek poetry and the literatures of the ancient Near East, with notable publications on Mesopotamian religious poetry and Sumerian literary texts. He is currently completing a book on the myths of kingship in early Greece and the ancient Near East, and continues to explore unpublished literary texts from ancient Mesopotamia.
