Biography

Christopher Bang Newgard is a distinguished professor in Nutrition and the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke University, where he also serves as the Director of the Sarah W. Stedman Nutrition Metabolism Center. His research focuses on metabolic regulation and fuel homeostasis in mammalian systems, particularly concerning insulin secretion and pancreatic islet β-cells. Significant projects underway in his laboratory include exploring mechanisms of insulin secretion regulation, developing protective methods against immune-mediated damage to β-cells, investigating the systems controlling hepatic glucose balance, and studying lipid-induced impairment in insulin signaling associated with diabetes. Newgard has an extensive educational background with a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Dallas. He has received numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health and various other institutions to fund his research initiatives aimed at understanding metabolic processes and their implications for diseases such as diabetes and liver dysfunction.
