Dr. Christopher O'Donnell is an adjunct associate professor at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, specializing in cardiovascular medicine. He has an extensive background in epidemiology centered on complex cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which are the leading causes of death and disability in both men and women. His research emphasizes the genetic and genomic epidemiology of clinical and subclinical forms of atherosclerosis, including ventricular hypertrophy and thrombosis. Dr. O'Donnell leads large genome-wide association studies and oversees a well-phenotyped prospective study of multigenerational families from the general population, notably the NHLBI’s Framingham Heart Study SHARe Project. His interests extend to the heritable intermediate phenotypes of cardiovascular diseases, such as premature onset cardiovascular diseases and circulating biomarkers, as well as the subclinical atherosclerosis detectable through high-resolution cardiovascular imaging. His aims in genomic science are to design rigorous studies of human populations to uncover the etiology of CVD and discover new preventative and therapeutic targets for these conditions. He is associated with the VA Boston Healthcare System and collaborates on many impactful research projects in the field.
