Biography

Christopher Philo is a Professor of Geography at the University of Glasgow. His research interests encompass historical and cultural rural geographies, mental ill-health, social geographies of 'outsiders', children's geographies, new animal geographies, and the historical and contemporary figurations of public space. He specializes in Foucauldian studies and the historiography of geography, focusing on historical research related to 'madness' and asylums. Philo has authored a significant book titled 'Geographical History of Institutional Provision for the Insane in Medieval to 1860s England and Wales: Space Reserved for Insanity', published in 2004. He earned his degree in Geography from the University of Cambridge in 1983 and completed his PhD in 1992. Philo was appointed Chair of Geography at the University of Glasgow in 1995, and has since contributed significantly to the academic community, serving as Head of the Department of Geography and Geomatics from October 2008 to June 2013. He has been involved in various national UK research assessment exercises and is currently the editor of Progress in Human Geography. Philo also maintains a strong online presence, featuring unpublished research materials and blogs on platforms focused on learning disabilities and urban spirituality.
