Dr. Christopher Prior

Biography

Professor Christopher Prior is a historian researching the legacies of the British Empire, with a particular interest in the history of modern sub-Saharan Africa. His research tends to concentrate on the intellectual and socio-political networks that created and underpinned Britain’s colonial and post-colonial actions and sensibilities in the modern era. His work touches upon topics such as race and identity, decolonisation, nationalism, Cold War military intervention, humanitarianism, and aid, as well as communism and democracy. Currently, he is researching British foreign policy in sub-Saharan Africa in the wake of decolonisation, focusing on the roles the British government attempted to play in the newly emerging post-colonial context. His resultant monograph addresses key policy aims and the management of external actors, particularly the United States, with thematic concerns including democracy, communism, military intervention, and counter-espionage through MI6 intelligence. Additionally, he is investigating football in postcolonial Africa, revealing globalization and transnational social political networks in the modern age.
