Biography

Christopher Ratté is a professor specializing in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology at the University of Michigan. He received his PhD from Harvard University and has also studied at the University of California at Berkeley. Ratté has taught at Florida State University, New York University, and the University of Pennsylvania before joining the University of Michigan's faculty in 2006. His research focuses on understanding the role of the built environment in creating social and cultural identities, particularly in regions at the peripheries of the Greek and Roman worlds. He has participated in numerous excavation projects, notably in Sardis and Aphrodisias, and has directed archaeological surveys in regions such as Notion and Vani in Georgia. Ratté has published extensively, authoring five books and more than fifty articles and excavation reports. He has served in leadership positions such as Director of the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology and Director of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. He teaches courses related to Greek and Roman architecture, sculpture, and archaeology, and has curated notable exhibitions at the Kelsey Museum.
