Chris Rea is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and International Public Affairs at Brown University. His research focuses on how institutions and organizations shape environmental governance and politics, particularly in the context of climate change, species extinction, and environmental justice. Before joining Brown, Chris was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES) and was a faculty member at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs and the Department of Sociology at Ohio State University. He earned his PhD in Sociology from UCLA and served as a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, Germany. Chris is an alumnus of the Summer Institute on Organizational Effectiveness at Stanford University’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. His research also incorporates insights from political sociology, environmental sociology, and historical institutionalism to address critical environmental issues. Notably, Chris is the founding principal investigator of the Rea Environment and Society Lab (RESL) and is actively involved in teaching and mentoring students at both undergraduate and doctoral levels. He has received numerous awards for his teaching and research contributions, including the Mary K. Marvel Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award and the Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award from the John Glenn College of Public Affairs.
