Biography

Christopher Schmitt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Boston University, focusing his research on Biological Anthropology. He co-directs the Sensory Morphology Anthropological Genomics Lab (SMAGL) on the Charles River Campus. His research primarily investigates how non-human primate models can help understand adaptations to extreme ecological conditions, especially concerning the impacts of extreme anthropogenic climate change. He explores how environmental variations influence the life histories of developing primates during critical periods of plasticity. Schmitt employs behavioral ecology, morphometric techniques, and genomics methods to study metabolic disorders in savanna monkeys and the adaptations of woolly monkeys to high elevation. He has been a faculty member at BU for seven years, where he is committed to mentoring students and guiding research initiatives.
