Biography

Chris Schofield studied chemistry for his undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. He later moved to Oxford for DPhil studies with Jack Baldwin on the synthesis and biosynthesis of antibiotics. He became a Departmental Demonstrator at the Dyson Perrins Laboratory in 1990 and has been a Lecturer in Chemistry and a Fellow of Hertford College. In 1998, he became Professor of Chemistry and served as Head of Organic Chemistry from 2011 to 2021. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and serves as Head of Chemistry at the Ineos Oxford Institute for Antimicrobial Research. His research group operates at the interface of chemistry, biology, and medicine, focusing on antibiotic research and the regulation of gene expression in a variety of organisms including bacteria, plants, and animals. His work has identified new opportunities for medicinal intervention and has contributed significantly to industrial applications in the pharmaceutical sector.
