Biography

Christopher Shepherd is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Australian National University, where he specializes in the anthropology of development and social studies of science and technology. He earned his PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2000, focusing on Indigenous agriculture and development in the Andes of Peru. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Timor-Leste and has been involved in research related to colonial history, Indigenous religion, and issues surrounding youth violence. Shepherd has published two books, including "Timor-Leste: Development and Environmental Politics" (2014) and "Haunted Houses and Ghostly Encounters: Animism and Ethnography in East Timor, 1860–1975" (2019), which have received significant acclaim, yielding numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. His research interests encompass postcolonial studies, Latin American studies, and Asian studies, with ongoing work in human trafficking and cultural diversity. He has also been awarded various research grants and has collaborated with numerous development organizations in the regions he studies.
