Biography

Professor Christopher Uyeda's research focuses on the discovery of new catalysts and the central pursuit of efficient and sustainable processes in organic synthesis. His research group encompasses various aspects of synthetic methodology that aim to address fundamentally challenging bond activations and constructions, providing practical solutions to unsolved synthetic problems. Uyeda's approach leverages unique opportunities in molecular sciences to rationally manipulate catalyst structures to control their function and probe their mechanisms. The group adopts a highly interdisciplinary approach, employing a diverse array of physical and organic inorganic techniques, including spectroscopic and computational tools to characterize catalytic intermediates and transition states. The current major research focus areas include: 1) The design and study of catalytic active sites containing metal-metal bonds; 2) The development of catalytic carbene transfer reactions for synthesizing complex building blocks relevant to drug discovery; 3) The synthesis of conjugated materials that contain photoactive and electroactive N=N linkages.
