Biography

Christopher Wlezien is the Hogg Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin, having joined the faculty in 2013. He previously taught at Temple University and was a Reader in Comparative Government at Nuffield College, University of Oxford. Wlezien co-founded the ESRC-funded Oxford Spring School in Quantitative Methods for Social Research and served as founding director of the Institute for the Study of Political Economy at the University of Houston. His research primarily develops a ‘thermostatic’ model of public opinion and policy, examining the dynamic interrelationships between preferences and spending across various budgetary policy domains. He has conducted cross-national investigations focusing on the UK and Canada, contributing to the book 'Degrees of Democracy', published by Cambridge University Press. His recent work explores the intersection of news coverage and public responsiveness to policy, publishing findings in several articles and books including 'Information Democracy: Public Policy and News'. Wlezien has also served as a co-editor for the international journal 'Elections, Public Opinion and Parties' and is on the editorial boards of several other academic journals. He is actively involved in research supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, focusing on electoral institutions, representation, and public perceptions, and has authored numerous articles addressing the evolution of voter preferences during electoral cycles.
