Chuan He is the John T. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on chemical biology, particularly on the roles of RNA modifications and DNA methylation in cellular processes. He is known for discovering various RNA demethylases and understanding the regulatory functions of RNA methylation in gene expression, cell differentiation, and development. His lab has elucidated the mechanisms by which N6-methyladenosine (m6A) influences mRNA stability and translation, contributing significantly to the field of epitranscriptomics. Chuan has also developed novel genomic methodologies to map RNA modifications and understand their implications in health and disease. His contributions have expanded the knowledge of how RNA modifications serve as critical regulatory mechanisms in mammalian biology. He obtained his B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by postdoctoral research at Harvard University. He joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 2008 and has since received numerous accolades for his work in chemistry and molecular biology.
