Biography

E. Chui-Ying Yan is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Yale University, where she has been a faculty member since 2007. Her research focuses on developing experimental and computational approaches to chiral-selective vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy (chiral SFG) to probe biological functions at aqueous interfaces. Yan's work aims to generate chiral SFG spectra from biopolymers such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, benchmarking to validate computational tools, and revealing fundamental mechanisms of folding and hydration of biopolymers at aqueous interfaces. Additionally, she is expanding the applications of her research to solve fundamental engineering problems, such as probing DNA-drug binding modes and detecting displacement of water in DNA's hydration shell. Professor Yan has made significant contributions to the pharmaceutical industry by developing strategies to stabilize therapeutic proteins in various production and storage conditions.
