Biography

Chung-Pei Ma received Ph.D. degrees in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley in 2002 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology. Prior to this, she was an Assistant and Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was honored with the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. In addition to her academic pursuits, Ma is an avid violin player and was a notable exchange student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She has won the prize in the Taiwan National Violin Competition in 1983. Ma also serves as a scientific editor for the Astrophysical Journal, contributing her expertise to the field. Her primary research interests lie in theoretical cosmology and astrophysics, focusing on topics such as dark matter and dark energy, cosmic microwave background radiation, gravitational lensing, galaxy formation and evolution, supermassive black holes, and the large-scale structure of the universe. She collaborates with observers to study the properties of galaxies using telescopes at Palomar and Keck observatories.
