Biography

Chung-Wai Chow is a transplant respirologist at the Toronto Lung Transplant Programme, part of the Ajmera Multi-Organ Transplant Programme at University Health Network. He completed his MD and PhD studies at the University of Toronto, specializing in Adult Respiratory Medicine and Cell Biology, respectively. He also undertook a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, where he was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. As a clinician-scientist, his research focuses on the development and assessment of novel techniques for evaluating lung function, particularly in the context of chronic airway diseases and lung transplantation. His work includes the development of machine learning techniques aimed at improving diagnostic accuracy. He leads large prospective studies comparing respiratory oscillometry in outpatient settings to standard spirometry across various patient populations. His research is supported by grants from CIHR, NSERC, NIH, and the Lung Health Foundation. Chow holds several prominent positions including Chair of the Lung Health Foundation Research Advisory Committee and President of the Humboldt Association Canada, as well as Chair of the Awards Committee for the University of Toronto Institute of Medical Sciences.
