Dr. Ciara Kennefick

Biography

Ciara Kennefick is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Oxford and a Tutorial Fellow at Christ Church. She has been a Visiting Professor at Université Panthéon-Assas in Paris and a Visiting Fellow at the Stockholm Centre for Commercial Law at the University of Stockholm. Additionally, Ciara serves as a Research Fellow at the Institute of European and Comparative Law at the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on private law from comparative and historical perspectives, with a particular interest in how pricing and significant legal ideas have influenced various fields of law and the rediscovery of Roman law since around 1100. In 2020, she received the David Yale Prize from the Selden Society for outstanding contribution to the history of law in England and Wales, acknowledging her extensive commitment to research in the field over more than a decade. Ciara has completed graduate degrees in law, including a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) at the University of Oxford. Her undergraduate education included studies in law and French literature at University College Cork, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Montpellier. Throughout her academic career, she has lectured extensively, including at Pembroke College, where she began her doctoral studies, and held a Lectureship at King’s College London before returning to Oxford in 2019 to take on her current position.
