Ciaran Harman is an Associate Professor and Russell Craft Faculty Scholar at the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on landscape hydrology, particularly the transport of water and contaminants through various landscapes. He investigates the interplay between hydrologic and ecological processes, employing theory, experiments, modeling, fieldwork, and data analysis to explore the co-evolution of landscape structure and hydrologic dynamics. His work aims to enhance predictive capabilities regarding streamflow and water quality in headwater catchments. Ciaran directs the Landscape Hydrology Lab, addressing fundamental challenges in hydrologic science and transitioning it into the interdisciplinary field of critical zone science. He holds prestigious memberships in several scientific unions and has received notable awards including the NSF Career Award and the Early Career Award from the American Geophysical Union. Ciaran earned his undergraduate degrees in arts and engineering from the University of Western Australia before completing a master’s degree in geography and a PhD in civil engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After a postdoctoral position at the University of Arizona, he joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2012, where he also has joint appointments in the departments of Environmental Health Engineering and Earth and Planetary Sciences.
