Dr. Cigdem Akman

Biography

Cigdem Akman, MD, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and serves as the Medical Director of the NYU Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Program. With a commitment to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for children with epilepsy and neurological conditions, Dr. Akman specializes in various forms of epilepsy including focal and generalized seizures. Her professional journey began with a passion for medicine inspired by her father, leading her to transition from internal medicine to pediatrics. She plays a crucial role in evaluating patients for surgical interventions, utilizing techniques such as intracranial electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring and cortical mapping to fully understand the epileptogenic focus prior to surgery. As part of the Pediatric Epilepsy Program at NYU Langone, she collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to deliver innovative treatment options and holistic management of epilepsy. Dr. Akman finds fulfillment in her work, especially in making a meaningful impact on the health and quality of life of her patients and their families. She believes it’s a privilege to be a trusted partner in the journey of managing epilepsy.
