Biography

Cigdem Eskicioglu is a Professor and the NSERC/Metro Vancouver Industrial Research Chair in Resource Recovery at the School of Engineering, University of British Columbia (UBC). She specializes in wastewater sludge treatment, focusing on advanced treatment processes for efficient contaminant removal and resource recovery. She leads the Bioreactor Technology Group (BTG), which operates state-of-the-art laboratory facilities at UBC's Okanagan Campus. Dr. Eskicioglu has conducted extensive research on novel pretreatment technologies coupled with anaerobic digestion to convert slowly biodegradable organic residues into bio-methane, bio-hydrogen, and energy. She is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia and a member of several professional organizations, including the Water Environment Federation and the Canadian Association on Water Quality. Dr. Eskicioglu has received numerous awards for her research, including the UBC Okanagan’s Researcher of the Year Award and the City of Kelowna’s Mayor's Environmental Award. Her research interests encompass the thermochemical and biochemical conversion of sludge treatment processes and the impact of emerging contaminants on sludge treatment technologies.
