Biography

Cindy Aden graduated from Stanford University with a degree in International Relations and a focus on languages, cultural communication, and political science. She completed a certification program at Stanford’s Mass Media Institute, later working as a reporter at Palo Alto Weekly and freelancing for multiple weekly newspapers in the Northwest. Cindy graduated from the University of Washington with a master’s in Library & Information Science and began her library career as an intern at the Library of Congress. Throughout her career, she has held various positions at the University of Washington as a reference librarian and collections selector, and served as Assistant Director at Kitsap Regional Library. She later joined Amazon.com as a program manager for cataloging and served as Head of Cataloging at Corbis. Cindy worked with OCLC for seven years to enhance library discovery over the internet. In August 2016, she became Washington State Librarian, focusing on broadband access, e-book platforms, and federal library funding. In August 2020, she became an iSchool Distinguished Practitioner at the University of Washington, leveraging her broad experience in journalism, government, and internet search discovery to ensure libraries remain relevant to their communities.
