Biography

Cindy Arvidson is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology at Michigan State University. She holds a B.A. in Biology from the University of La Verne and a Ph.D. in Microbial Molecular Genetics from UCLA. Arvidson has conducted postdoctoral studies at Oregon Health Science University. Her research focuses on understanding the adaptations of the sexually transmitted pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which presents significant public health challenges globally. Her lab studies the mechanisms by which N. gonorrhoeae interacts with the female urogenital tract, particularly how it responds to contact with mucus membranes, the host's immune system, and the normal microflora. Arvidson's work aims to uncover the gene expression changes that take place during infection, leading to improved strategies for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions against bacterial STIs. She also investigates the role of probiotics and the beneficial Lactobacillus species in preventing infections. Her goal is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these interactions to advance preventative treatments for infections affecting the female reproductive tract.
