Biography

Cindy Hutnik is a Professor and the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. She serves as the Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at the Ivey Eye Institute in London, Ontario. Dr. Hutnik holds the inaugural Marcel Louise Brunette Research Chair in Ophthalmology. With over 18 years of leadership in Glaucoma research, she has directed the Ophthalmology Basic Science Laboratory at the Lawson Health Research Institute and has been Chair of the Department for 15 years. Her academic journey began with a BSc and MD from the University of Ottawa followed by a PhD. Dr. Hutnik completed her ophthalmology training at the University of Western Ontario and has pursued subspecialty glaucoma training under mentorship from Dr. Paul Kaufman at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Her research focuses on the pathophysiology and management of glaucoma, and she has supervised more than 200 students at various training levels. Her work has been acknowledged with 95 awards and she contributes actively to various professional committees, promoting collaborative models of eye care. Dr. Hutnik is also involved in several research projects investigating the effectiveness of new treatments for glaucoma.
