Biography

Cinnamon Bloss is a tenured Professor at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at the University of California San Diego. She is the Founding Director of the Center for Empathy and Technology and serves as the Associate Director at the UCSD Institute for Empathy and Compassion. Dr. Bloss conducts interdisciplinary research that focuses on social and behavioral phenomena related to emerging information biotechnologies. Her research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, along with philanthropic contributions. In 2021, she was appointed as the NIH Director to Chair the Novel Exceptional Technology Research Advisory Committee, a federal advisory body that provides recommendations regarding the scientific, safety, and ethical issues tied to emerging biotechnologies. Previously, Dr. Bloss was the Co-chair for the National Academy of Sciences' Gene Drives for Biomedical Research Working Group. She has published over 100 papers and has received several accolades including the Carmel Prize for Research Excellence from the Western Society for Medicine and the 2022 Mentorship Award from the American Society of Human Genetics for mentoring over 50 trainees. Dr. Bloss has been recognized with multiple teaching awards at UCSD and has established a new concentration in Technology and Precision Health within the Master of Public Health program. With over a decade of experience, she is also a California-licensed clinical psychologist.
