Biography

Claire Carmalt graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with a first-class honours degree in chemistry in 1992. She completed her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Nick Norman on 'Synthetic structural studies involving heavier elements from groups 13 to 15'. Following her doctorate, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Science Technology Center, University of Texas at Austin, working with Professors Alan Cowley and Mike White. Her postdoctoral research focused on the synthesis of novel precursors for thin film growth, which fueled her interest in materials chemistry. In 1997, she was awarded the Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship, which allowed her to join University College London. She began her lectureship at UCL in 2001 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2002, reader in 2004, and professor in 2009. She served as the Head of the Inorganic and Materials Section of the department from 2010 to 2016 and was the Vice-Dean for Education in the Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at UCL. In 2016, she became the 18th Head of the Department of Chemistry, the first woman to hold this position. In 2021, she was recognized with the UCL Leadership Award for Outstanding Contribution and has received several awards including the RSC Meldola Medal in 2000, the RSC Applied Inorganic Chemistry Award in 2019, and the RSC Tilden Prize in 2024 for her work in materials chemistry.
