Claire Ellul graduated as an Electrical Electronics Engineer from the University of Malta and transitioned into the field of Geographical Information Systems. With over ten years of international consulting experience as a programmer and data integrator, she returned to academia in 1997 to complete her MSc in GIS at University College London (UCL) before commencing her PhD in 2003. Ellul's doctoral research focused on improving the performance of 3D GIS analysis. Following her PhD, she engaged in part-time postdoctoral work, developing systems for community engagement through web mapping and creating maps to support research on social exclusion and fear of crime. She has been a lecturer at UCL since January 2010.
