Biography

Claire Le Foll specializes in East European Jewish history and culture, focusing particularly on the history and culture of Jews in Eastern Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries. Her research interests include inter-ethnic relations in the Western borderlands of the Tsarist and Soviet empires, with a specific emphasis on Belarus. She has explored the development of the Vitebsk Art School in the context of the Russian avant-garde and its quest for Jewish art. Her work encompasses political and cultural interactions between Jews and Belarusians, and she has published numerous articles on literature, art, cinema, and scholarship in pre-revolutionary and Soviet Belarus. Currently, she is working on a biography of Zmitrok Biadulia, a Belarusian writer of Jewish origin and a significant cultural and political figure in Belarusian history. This project aims to analyze aspects of Jewish-Belarusian interactions, the emergence of the Belarusian national idea, and the relation of popular Belarusian culture through Biadulia's literary works. Claire is also dedicated to teaching undergraduate and MA courses related to Jewish history and culture, as well as Russian and Soviet history.
