Dr. Clara Dawson

Biography

Clara Dawson joined the University of Manchester in September 2014, after holding posts at Birmingham University and the University of Edinburgh. She has been a visiting research fellow at Baylor University and Central European University, and also a visiting teaching fellow at the University of Hong Kong. Her research specializes in poetry from the long nineteenth century and has developed pathways in environmental humanities and print culture. Her early career focused on print culture, leading to her monograph 'Victorian Poetry Culture Evaluation' published by Oxford University Press in 2020. This work examines the relationship between periodical reviews and poetry, arguing that the culture of evaluation shapes Victorian poetic forms. Her more recent endeavors include projects on avian poetics that integrate disciplines of conservation science and natural history. Dawson is committed to supervising postgraduates on topics intersecting Romantic Victorian poetry and environmental humanities, actively contributing to the wider discourse on literature's role in addressing environmental concerns.
