Biography

Clara Joseph is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Calgary, with an adjunct position in the Department of Classics and Religion. Her teaching and research focus primarily on South Asian Religion, Literature, and Culture, as well as Christianity and Literary Cultural Theory. She is a creative writer who has taught courses in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Her notable works include 'Christianity in India: Anti-Colonial Turn' (2019) and 'Agent Margin: Nayantara Sahgal’s Gandhian Fiction' (2008), as well as poetry volumes such as 'M/OTHER' (2024) and 'Dandelions Bhabha' (2018). Her recent scholarly publication, 'India’s Nonviolent Freedom Struggle: Thomas Christians (1599–1799)' (2024), provides a fresh perspective on the Indian freedom struggle from the viewpoint of Thomas Christians in South India. She has also co-edited collections such as 'Global Fissures: Postcolonial Fusions' (2006) and 'Theology and Literature: Rethinking Reader Responsibility' (2006).
