Clare Bakewell is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at King's College London. She obtained her MChem degree from the University of Leeds in 2010 and subsequently moved to Imperial College London for her PhD supervision under Professors Charlotte Williams and Nick Long. After completing an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship, she spent a year working with the start-up company Econic Technologies before returning to Imperial for a postdoctoral position with Professor Mark Crimmin. In October 2018, she began her independent career as a Ramsay Memorial Fellow at University College London and joined King's College London as a lecturer in October 2021. Her research explores the use of inexpensive, Earth-abundant, non-toxic main-group metals to conduct chemical reactions typically associated with transition metals. She utilizes advanced techniques to isolate electronically unusual, structurally interesting high-energy compounds, focusing on redox chemistry of main-group elements and the activation and functionalization of small molecules such as CO and CO2, aiming to create value-added products for various applications.
