Biography

Clare Carlisle grew up in Manchester and studied philosophy at Trinity College, Cambridge, receiving her BA, MA, and PhD between 1995 and 2002. After serving as a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Liverpool, she joined King’s College London in 2011. As a professor, she has authored eight books, including philosophical biographies of Søren Kierkegaard and George Eliot, and has edited Eliot’s translation of Spinoza’s Ethics. In 2024, she was invited to deliver the prestigious Gifford Lectures at the University of St Andrews and is currently the President of the British Society for the Philosophy of Religion. Her research interests include the history of modern philosophy, particularly focusing on Spinoza, Kierkegaard, and the intersection of philosophy with literature and art.
