Biography

Clare Carolin is a contemporary art historian, curator, and researcher specializing in the intersection of art and visual activism, particularly related to militarized force and state violence. With a focus on diverse forms of state violence and urban overdevelopment, Carolin explores visual histories of interracial solidarity and develops curatorial formats for presenting art. Her previous roles include Hayward Exhibitions Curator and Senior Curator at Modern Art Oxford, as well as Co-Director of Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art. Recent curatorial projects include 'The Surface World' and 'Spectres of Modernism', among others. Carolin has held various positions in leading art institutions and has worked with numerous prominent artists. She is also engaged in mentoring emerging artists and curators across multiple institutions. Her academic writings include a monograph based on an AHRC-funded study and various edited publications. Carolin holds multiple advanced degrees in Art History and Curating, and her research interests encompass contemporary art, military conflict, political iconography, and visual culture, especially in the context of Northern Ireland and colonialism.
